Can You Buy CBD Oil on Amazon?

According to Amazon’s policy, the sale of CBD is clearly barred:

“Listings for products containing cannabidiol (CBD) are prohibited, including but not limited to:

Full spectrum hemp oil

Rich hemp oil

Products that have been identified as containing CBD by LegitScript”

Amazon prohibits CBD sales in general because it doesn’t acknowledge the difference between hemp and marijuana CBD. It groups the vastly different substances together, failing to recognize that hemp CBD has no more than 0.3% THC (so it can’t get you high) and that hemp-derived CBD is legal in 47 states.

Despite Amazon’s policy, a search for “CBD” yields thousands of results. How is that possible? First, Amazon doesn’t restrict the tags that sellers use to describe their products in the back-end of listings. Even if “CBD” isn’t in the product’s title, it can still appear in a search because of the tag. Second, sellers get around the naming issue by labeling the products as “hemp” oil, cream, gummies, etc. Hemp oil is extracted from the seeds of hemp plants, whereas CBD is extracted from the leaves and stems, giving these two elements very different properties.

Hemp oil is a great source of protein and vitamins E and B, but it doesn’t work with the endocannabinoid system the way CBD does, so it doesn’t provide the same benefits. These differences are subtle but very important, and less reputable sellers use them to trick new buyers into believing they’re buying CBD oil on Amazon when, in fact, they’re purchasing hemp seed oil.

Buying from an illegitimate seller won’t just waste your money, but it could also be dangerous. Low-quality products may contain harmful chemicals. As with anything you put in your body, you should be careful and only consume products you’re confident in.

How to Buy CBD Oil Online

You may not be able to purchase legitimate CBD on Amazon, but there are good sources of CBD online elsewhere. Consider taking these steps before making any online CBD purchase.

Find a Certificate of Lab Analysis

A certificate of analysis tells you exactly what’s in the CBD product. Companies can’t fake the data and use marketing ploys to skirt around third-party analysis. If a certificate isn’t readily available on the seller’s website, request one from them. Reputable companies are happy to share the results because they’ve invested in the tests and are proud of their product. Brands that aren’t transparent may have questionable products.

Read the Label

Legitimate CBD producers will be as forthcoming as possible on their products’ labels. Look for the following details:

• Serving size
• Servings per bottle/package
• Amount of CBD per serving
• Full description of ingredients
• Indication of lab testing
• Directions
• Contact information

Check if the product is full spectrum CBD or an isolate. Full spectrum products use the whole hemp plant, while isolates extract the CBD from the plant. There’s that full spectrum CBD is more effective due to the “Entourage Effect,” which is when all parts of the cannabis plant—cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids—work together within the endocannabinoid system for a complete experience. Isolates can be legitimate, but they require a bit more homework to ensure quality.

Be wary of product reviews in general, as companies can purchase positive reviews online to trick buyers, making it impossible to know if they’re legitimate. That said, if a product has a number of negative reviews or complaints that it didn’t deliver as promised, it’s probably one to avoid.

Get to know the brand before making any purchase. Legitimate CBD producers are eager to prove their validity to potential customers. Their website will have a Contact page that includes a customer service line, email address, and/or contact form. Ideally, the brand should also have helpful guides that detail everything you should know about CBD. The more comprehensive the website, the more likely that company is putting out worthwhile products.
