One of the most common questions people have before trying CBD is “How does CBD make you feel?” It’s a tricky question to answer because everyone has different experiences, but we’ll walk you through the basics of how CBD works within the body, whether or not psychoactive properties exist, and other known effects with the help of two Frontier Jackson Brand Ambassadors who use CBD regularly.

How Does CBD Work in the Body?

The short version is the body interacts with CBD by way of the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a system that produces endocannabinoids and regulates several essential bodily processes through its receptors.

So what does CBD do? When CBD is taken, it interacts with the two most important ECS receptors, known as CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are primarily found in the brain and regulate things like mood, tiredness, appetite and pain. Conversely, CB2 receptors are found throughout the rest of the body and influence skin health and inflammation. And while CBD doesn’t directly bind to either type of receptor, it works by boosting the effects of the endocannabinoids that the body naturally produces.

Does CBD Get You High?

A common misconception is that CBD has psychoactive properties. Although CBD is derived from hemp, which is part of the cannabis family, products such as CBD oil, edibles, and topicals only contain 0.3% THC, meaning you won’t get high.

In terms of chemical makeup, THC and CBD are exactly the same. However, the chemical arrangement of each differs by a single atom. And while that may not sound significant, the variance actually causes THC to be able to directly bind to CB1 receptors within the ECS, causing the euphoric high feeling. Alternatively, CBD’s weak bond to CB1 receptors does not cause a CBD high and has even been shown to reverse or limit THC’s ability to form bonds with CB1 receptors.

Are There Other Effects from CBD?

There are a variety of potential benefits from taking CBD that span several categories of ailments and symptoms. Here are some of the top effects:

  • Calming Agent: Utilizing CBD for anxiety is one of the top overall reasons for use. While not completely studied, it’s believed that a number of terpenes (a component found in CBD) possess anti-anxiety and anti-stress properties.
  • Sleep Aid: Using CBD for sleep is picking up steam, and it’s primarily due to its calming properties. The mild adherence of CBD to CB1 receptors can inhibit some feelings associated with OCD and control serotonin release.
  • Pain Relief: Another of the top CBD uses is for pain relief. CBD can be effective with pain due to amplifying natural hormones in the ECS—in this case, anandamide, which helps regulate pain and mood. While some bodies are prone to prematurely break down this hormone, CBD slows down the breakdown process and ultimately can offer relief from pain.

How do you use CBD?

I take it for anxiety, being overstressed, and to go to sleep. During the day, I take it as needed, but I take it daily before bed.

Are you more relaxed, less stressed, or better focused?

CBD is definitely calming. You just feel calmer when you take it. Suddenly everything is not as intense. CBD makes stress and anxiety less intense so you can focus more since your brain isn’t busy worrying about unnecessary stuff.

Does CBD make you feel tired?

No, it doesn’t make you feel sleepy or drowsy. I don’t wake up groggy or hungover. What’s awesome about CBD is that there are calming effects without feeling high or drowsy. You wake up feeling like you didn’t take anything. I used to use things like melatonin, but stopped because it messes with natural sleep patterns, and I felt groggy the next day.

How much CBD do you take in mgs?

I just use a full dropper (16.6mg of CBD).

What has your experience with Frontier Jackson been like so far?

I had taken CBD before, and it didn’t really work. Frontier Jackson’s products are really effective for me. In particular, I love the mixed-berry tincture. The gummies are great as well, but the tincture definitely kicks in faster because it’s under your tongue.

What have you been using CBD for?

For everything—a lot of outdoor stuff. I use it mostly for hikes or trails and outdoors. I always take it when I get to the top. I’m also taking it before sleeping and trying to go to bed, or anytime I’m feeling kind of agitated or stressed.

Does CBD help with pain or soreness?

It’s kind of amazing. It’s not easy to explain a specific thing. If I do a hike and take CBD, I don’t feel nearly as sore, especially the next day. It seems to alleviate the usual pain in my feet. It’s pretty insane! I had a couple of falls, took CBD, and used the CBD ice, and that really helped with the pain. The day after, it was almost like it didn’t happen. You don’t really feel anything. I just feel the results.

Does CBD help with stress?

I just feel less stressed. Like I said, it’s not a sudden thing. I don’t really feel anything.

How long does it take CBD to take effect?

Within 30 minutes to an hour.

Does CBD make you sleepy or drowsy?

It doesn’t make me drowsy. For me, it’s like this: I usually have to force myself to go to bed. When I take CBD, I can just allow my body to rest. CBD doesn’t make me sleepy or groggy. It just allows me to feel ready to rest and fall asleep. It takes the stress and anxiety out so I just relax.

There aren’t even the slightest effects the next morning. And honestly since I’ve taken CBD, I’ve not had to take Advil or anything for pain. I take CBD for pain. If I’m sore from a big hike—like the seven or eight hour hike I did the other day—I expect to feel dead, but I’m completely okay.

Any intoxicating effects?

No, it definitely does not make me high at all. I really just feel relaxed. Whatever I feel, I’m able to feel better. If I’m in the middle of focusing, it helps me focus. CBD doesn’t make me sleepy—I function perfectly fine. If I’m trying to sleep, it helps me relax and fall asleep. And I haven’t noticed any side effects. Also, my mom is hooked. She has arthritis, and it’s been helping her a lot with her arthritis. When she’s on her feet, it’s helping her pain.
