As more CBD products hit the market, the need for product testing is on the rise. But what exactly do we learn from CBD lab testing, and why is it important for consumers? Here’s what you need to know…

What Do CBD Lab Tests Do?

The reason CBD companies rely on lab testing is because, in order to sell CBD throughout the United States, there are specific regulations that need to be met. Through testing, companies and consumers can find out exactly what’s inside the product they are about to consume.

As many products are made with full spectrum CBD hemp oil, there’s more than just cannabidiol included. To find out what’s inside, companies will primarily run two tests to provide an accurate understanding of what the product contains.

Cannabinoid Potency

The first, and possibly most important, test run on a CBD product is the cannabinoid potency test. This test will tell you how much of each cannabinoid is included in the full spectrum product. This is how you know whether or not a product is telling you the truth in saying a certain amount of CBD is included with each dose. On top of knowing how much CBD is included, you’ll see amounts of CBD, CBN, CBG, THC, and more.

When looking through a certificate of lab analysis, it’s important to focus on two numbers: CBD content and THC levels.

Look at this certificate of analysis for our Silver Tincture below:

With CBD content, this confirms what the packaging has already told you. There’s 500mg of CBD in the bottle, and with 30ml, that comes to just about 15mg of CBD/ml. The test confirmed this, telling the consumer that what the bottle says they will get is true.

With THC levels, you want to ensure that there’s less than 0.3% contained within a sample. While some traces may still exist, hemp CBD is required to have less than 0.3% THC, no matter what. In the case of our Silver Tincture, there is a non-detectable amount of THC. It’s under 0.3%, so this also abides by the law surrounding hemp based CBD. Anything over the 0.3% is no longer a hemp product.

Terpene Profile

When putting together a list of benefits, most companies may start by having a terpene profile run on their product. Terpenes are important because they’re believed to provide all-natural health benefits like anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety, mood boosters, and even antibacterial properties. This is all dependent on what terpenes are found in the product, though. So knowing what’s inside of a product makes it easier to label later on.

The Importance of CBD Lab Testing

It may not seem like a big deal on the surface, but with any product that becomes popular rapidly, it’s easy to get duped by wannabe products that lie about what’s included or that are potentially unsafe.

By purchasing products that have been lab tested, you can feel a bit more sure of your choice and know that the product you’re going to be putting into your body won’t have unintended effects.

But lab testing isn’t the only thing that helps you know what separates good products from bad. To ensure you find the best products, here’s what you need to know.

Good Products Should Have…

  • A certificate of lab analysis showing everything it contains
  • All-natural, CBD hemp oil as a main ingredient
  • An easy-to-read ingredients label
  • Definition of how the CBD was extracted (CO2, Hydrocarbon, Ethanol)
  • A full description of ingredients
  • Positive online reviews

Bad Products May Have…

  • Short descriptions of ingredients
  • No listing of an amount of CBD per product
  • No definition of the extraction process used
  • No certificate of lab analysis
  • Contradicting information between website and labels
  • Negative online reviews
